FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
At Prairieland Breeders, our focus is on producing healthy, stable, and well rounded long haired German Shepherds who thrive as family companions. Our puppies are raised in a home environment with daily handling, early socialization, and intentional exposure to everyday life. We carefully plan each pairing with temperament, structure, and overall health in mind, not trends or volume.
We are selective about placement and take time to get to know each family before approving reservations. Our goal is not just to place puppies, but to support lifelong matches. We remain available to our families for guidance and support long after puppies go home.
Long haired German Shepherds are a beautiful and distinctive variation of the breed. In addition to their striking coats, they are often known for being people focused, affectionate, and strongly bonded to their families. Many families find them to be especially well suited to active households that value companionship and connection.
While individual temperament always varies, long haired Shepherds tend to thrive in homes where they are included as part of daily life rather than left to work independently. They are intelligent, loyal, and deeply devoted dogs who do best with consistent interaction and engagement.
Long haired German Shepherds require regular grooming to keep their coats healthy and comfortable. Weekly brushing is essential, with more frequent brushing during seasonal shedding periods. Their coats do not require trimming, but routine maintenance helps prevent matting and reduces shedding in the home.
Beyond grooming, proper care includes quality nutrition, regular veterinary care, mental stimulation, and appropriate exercise. This breed thrives when their physical and emotional needs are met consistently.
German Shepherds are an intelligent and active breed that requires both physical exercise and mental engagement. As puppies, their exercise needs are modest and focused on safe play, exploration, and basic training. As they mature, daily structured activity becomes important.
This does not mean endless running. Training sessions, walks, play, and mental challenges such as learning new skills are just as important as physical exercise. Families who enjoy spending time interacting with their dog tend to see the best results.
Adult size varies depending on genetics, sex, and individual development. Our dogs typically mature within the standard German Shepherd range, with males generally larger than females. We prioritize balanced structure, sound movement, and overall health rather than breeding for extreme size.
We are happy to discuss expected size ranges during the application process, but it is important to remember that growth and maturity vary from dog to dog.
Our puppies go home at eight weeks of age or later. This allows time for proper development, early socialization, and initial veterinary care. Before going home, puppies receive a veterinary health check, age appropriate vaccinations, deworming, and early handling.
We believe this early foundation plays a significant role in setting puppies up for long term success in their new homes.
We require an application for all families interested in reserving a puppy. This helps us understand your lifestyle, expectations, and home environment so we can ensure a good fit. Once approved, a deposit is required to hold a waitlist position.
Puppy selection is done in order of reservation placement once puppies are old enough for temperament observations. While we consider preferences, we may guide families toward certain puppies based on compatibility. Our priority is thoughtful placement that benefits both puppy and family.
Our breeding dogs are health tested and cleared for known breed related conditions. Puppies are examined by a veterinarian before going home and are sold with a health guarantee.
We also provide ongoing breeder support. We encourage families to reach out with questions at any stage of their dog’s life. Responsible breeding does not end when a puppy leaves our care.
We choose to focus our program on health, temperament, structure, and family suitability rather than registration status. While registration can be valuable in certain breeding programs, it does not automatically reflect quality, health, or temperament.
Our priority is producing well balanced dogs through intentional pairings and responsible placement. We are transparent about our practices and happy to discuss our breeding philosophy with families who value substance over paperwork.
